A Voice in the Night

Late one night after the children had all gone to sleep and I was getting ready to climb into bed, I heard someone enter the downstairs bathroom. I listened for a minute and upon hearing nothing unusual, climbed into bed, scriptures in hand.

No more than a few verses in, I heard the faintest, tiniest little sound. I put down the scriptures and listened intently… nothing. I began reading again. It wasn’t long before I heard what sounded like a tiny, itty bitty, little whimper. Once again, I put my scriptures down and listened… still nothing. I almost went back to reading, but decided to investigate instead.

All seemed well upstairs, I could hear no sound anywhere. Remembering the noise from earlier, I decided to check the downstairs bathroom, although I was sure it was nothing.

I knocked, and there was no response. The door however was locked. I knocked again and heard my young child… “Mom, I’m sick.”, spoken so quietly.

I got the locked door open and there was a weak, double sick child, sitting on the toilet covered in throw up. The entire bathroom, walls, doors and floor were covered. Too sick to cry, too sick to yell for help, running a high fever was a dear one, just trying to sit up.

After the hubby and I got everything clean and saw to the comfort of our little one, I was left to think. I was barely able to hear when I was standing on the other side of the door and yet I heard this weak, tiny whimper from upstairs in my room.

I know that we are able to hear the Savior’s messages more clearly as we read our scriptures. I have had thoughts and impressions before, but this is the first time my hearing was quite literally improved in order to help another person; my sweet tiny person, who in that moment, was incapable of helping himself. This gift was simple and yet is precious to me. I am thankful to a Heavenly Father who was kind enough to help this mom’s ears to hear.
